One of the most incredible things about living in San Diego is that you can be surfing in the morning and playing in the snow by afternoon. When winter rolls around, some of the best snow destinations in the West are just a few hours’ drive away.

Big Bear Lake

The classic San Diego-to-snow trip. Big Bear is about 3 hours northeast, and it’s got everything — skiing at Snow Summit and Bear Mountain, snow tubing at Alpine Slide, and a charming little village with great restaurants and shops. Rent a cabin, make a fire, and you’ll feel like you’re in Colorado without the plane ticket.

Mount Laguna

This is the closest snow to San Diego — just about an hour east. Mount Laguna doesn’t have ski resorts, but after a good storm it transforms into a winter wonderland. It’s perfect for snowball fights, building snowmen, and taking incredible photos. The Sunrise Highway drive up is gorgeous any time of year, but especially when dusted with snow.

Mammoth Mountain

For a serious ski trip, Mammoth is worth the 5-6 hour drive from San Diego. The snow here is legitimate — they regularly get 400+ inches per season. The town of Mammoth Lakes has fantastic restaurants and bars, and the skiing ranges from beginner-friendly to expert-only. Make it a long weekend for the best experience.

What to Bring

If you don’t ski regularly, rent gear at the resort rather than buying. Carry tire chains in your car even if you have AWD — they’re required on some mountain roads. Layer up: a moisture-wicking base, insulating mid-layer, and waterproof outer shell. And sunscreen — snow reflects UV like crazy.
