The Taco Stand has been a San Diego institution since they opened in North Park, and every new location has been a hit. But their latest outpost in downtown Oceanside might be the best one yet — and not just because of the tacos. The new space, the location, and the expanded menu make this the version of The Taco Stand that North County has been waiting for.
The Location
They took over a corner spot on Tremont Street, just two blocks from the pier and right in the heart of Oceanside’s rapidly evolving downtown. The space has an open-air front that blurs the line between indoor and outdoor — when the weather’s right (which is almost always), the whole restaurant opens up to the street. There’s a big communal patio in the back with picnic tables, murals from local artists, and enough shade to make a midday lunch comfortable.
What’s New on the Menu
The classics are all here — the carne asada taco is still one of the best in the county, the adobada is life-changing on a bad day, and the Baja-style fried fish taco is the reason this place became famous. But the Oceanside location has a few exclusives that make it worth the trip even if you’ve been to the other locations a hundred times.
The birria taco with consomme for dipping is new and absolutely incredible — crispy, cheesy, and messy in the best way. They’ve added a smoked marlin taco that’s a nod to Baja street food culture and it’s phenomenal. The breakfast menu (available until noon) now includes a chilaquiles plate that might be the best $12 you’ll spend in North County.
Drinks
The agua frescas are house-made daily — the horchata is creamy and perfectly spiced, and they rotate seasonal flavors like mango-chili and watermelon-lime. They’ve also added a small beer and wine selection with local craft options, and a frozen margarita machine that pumps out dangerously good frozen margs for $8.
Practical Info
Open daily 8am to 10pm. No reservations — order at the counter. Expect a line during peak lunch hours (11:30-1pm) but it moves fast. Most tacos are $4-6, so you can eat extremely well for under $20. Street parking or the public lot on Cleveland Street. This is the kind of place that makes living in North County feel like winning the lottery.
