Vista is already one of the most underrated beer towns in San Diego County, with heavy hitters like Iron Fist and Belching Beaver holding it down. But the new kid on the block — Folklore Brewing — is doing something different enough to stand out in a very crowded field. They opened two months ago in a warehouse space on Sycamore Avenue, and the word is spreading fast.
The Concept
Folklore’s whole thing is farmhouse and wild ales, which is a rarity in San Diego’s hop-forward landscape. The head brewer spent three years in Belgium learning traditional farmhouse techniques, and you can taste it. Every beer here has character — funky saisons, barrel-aged sours, and mixed-fermentation ales that change with the seasons. They also do a few clean, approachable styles for people who aren’t ready to go full sour.
What’s on Tap
The rotating tap list usually has 10-12 options. The “Vista Fog” saison — dry, peppery, with a hint of citrus — is already a local favorite and the perfect San Diego farmhouse beer. Their barrel-aged golden sour with apricot is complex without being overwhelming. For the less adventurous, the “Tall Tale” pale ale is a classic West Coast-style beer that’s clean and crushable. They also pour local wine and cider for non-beer drinkers in your group.
The Space & Food
The taproom is rustic industrial — concrete floors, barrel-lined walls, long communal tables, and a massive roll-up door that opens the whole front of the space. There’s a food truck partnership that rotates weekly, but the in-house cheese and charcuterie boards (built to pair with the beers) are the move. They source everything from North County producers — cheeses from Escondido, cured meats from a butcher in Oceanside.
